Confused and Frustrated

Today was the first day of school for 2009, and to say that we, Mick and I, were anxious would be an understatement.

We were not concerned about Charlie, at all. Charlie can take anything that is thrown at him, and will go with the flow. The teachers for Year 1 are both great, and either teacher would have been fine for Charlie. He got Mrs Holder, who was a substitute for Harry's class last year, and seems really nice. He is happy, and so are we.

Harry, on the other hand, is a different story. Without meaning to brag, or cause offence, Harry is smart. Harry was assessed by the school counsellor in 2007 and was found to have Superior Intelligence. His ability to self learn, and retain facts is phenomenal. He has focused on Maths and Science, and at this point in time, he has been obsessed with the elements of the Periodic Table. He can name 102 of the elements off by heart. He has learnt this himself in the past 6 weeks.

So this year, his grade (3) has been divided into two classes. One standard class, and a 3/4 composite class, and guess which one he is in. It makes no sense at all for him to not be given the chance to learn with Grade 4 people, and a wonderful chance for him to accelerate his education, but no, because he has social problems, and is younger in the Grade, they have stuck him in the class with the kids who require extra help. I just don't understand it. How can they not see what we see. The teacher at the Gifted Children's workshop said he was amazing, that the knowledge that he had, at his age, was beyond anything she had ever seen....yet he has been constantly held back at school.

Last year we didn't push the issue, but his teacher didn't extend him anywhere near what he needed, and we should have stepped in then, but I figured it was still Infants, and there was no rush. But now, this is getting beyond ridiculous, so now I have to make an appointment to see the school Principal, and try to find out what they are going to do to help him get the level of education he requires.

I am not looking forward to it. I am just so frustrated and confused. He is emotionally immature, I admit that, but he has an intelligence that truly blows me away. Why can't they see that.
