A sad day

Today is a very sad day because my horse, Kaluah, is being put to sleep. Mick bought me Kaluah 10 years ago, and she has been living with Mum and Ray ever since. Now she is very old, has little sight, is deaf and has arthritis. She is at the point where she is just unable to maintain any body fat at all. I went to see her on Monday and she looks very poor. Mum is devastated that she has had to make this decision, but I really believe it is the right one. With winter coming up and the temperatures dropping dramatically, there is a very real fear that she could fall down and not be able to get back up, and as a result freeze to death.

She has had a long great life, especially with Mum and Ray. She was the most gentle and reliable horse we have ever had. When Mum realised she had arthritis, she was put out to pasture, and she has enjoyed her time since then. Lately she has been poorly, but has picked up again, but this time she is just too old, and unable to keep herself warm.

I want to say that Mum and Ray have been her real owners for the last 10 years, and have treated her so well, but that is not unexpected because Mum couldn't be cruel to an animal if she tried. They have taken excellent care of her, and they will miss her probably more than me. I am thinking of Mum today because this has really broken her heart.....
